Moncrieff. /// Interview

Moncrieff is a soul artist currently making waves in London’s live music circuit, whose repertoire varies from soul ballads to high-energy grooves. 2014 has been a great year so far for the 20-year-old, landing gigs at the notorious Jazz Café and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. We recently caught up with Moncrieff to talk about all things soul.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Hey! I'm winding down from a show last night, had a nice lie in, and getting down to some writing :)

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
I'm obsessed with incredible and interesting voices, especially in soul music, it really is a big mix of a lot of genres, but the main flavour behind it all is really soul influenced. I like to be really honest with the music I make so people can really connect to it, whether it makes you want to cry or get up and dance, you know the energy and emotion behind the song is genuine.

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?
There are a mix of albums that have each influenced me as an artist and as a person.

Adele - 21
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Daniel Merriweather - Love and War
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist

What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?
I've only recently discovered an artist called JP. Cooper who is absolutely INCREDIBLE! He mixes folk, soul and gospel music and his voice is just amazing. Another Musician I've been listening to lately is Gregory Porter, The man's songs are so well written and genuine that you can't help but feel good listening to them!

Oh yeah, Listen to Jack Garratt - Worry. You can thank me later ;)
Where do you find inspiration for your music?
I am in love with interesting voices in music, Artists like Otis Redding, Paolo Nutini, Sam Smith and Amy Winehouse and their music really inspire me.

When writing new material, do you prefer to work alone, or with others (your band, producers etc.)?
I wouldn’t say I have a preference really, the songs that I'm working on at the moment have elements of all three in the writing, I initially create the bones of the song on my own and then it evolves with the addition of my musicians.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
The two best shows I have played have both come since I moved to London (from Ireland). The first was my headline show at The Borderline with my Big Band. I was completely blown away by the amount of people that came to the show and the positive reaction to the music. I played Jazz cafe back in June, which was amazing as it was in my top 5 venues that I wanted to play in my career.

What’s the worst gig you have ever done and why?
The worst show I have ever played was in a small pup back in my hometown. The band I was in at the time got called up to take part in a local battle of the band competition and that night, our rhythm guitarist couldn't make it so we had to perform without him. It was just awful!

You recently collaborated with Invaders of Nine, how did that come about?
Through the Magic of Social Media :) I had recently posted a link to my then new demo, "A Little Taste", and the guys got in touch and we worked from there :)

Did you enjoy working with them?
Yeah of course! The creation of the song was a really collaborative process and we all seemed to have the same ideas for the song so it went really smoothly.
Can we expect more of a drum and bass/electronic sound from you?
As much as I love that genre, most of the music I'm recording at the moment comes from more of a soulful organic background with a contemporary twist, there may be a little bit of electro vibe to some songs though :)
What can we expect from you in the upcoming months?
I'm currently in the production stage of a small albums worth of material working with a couple of really talented producers so I'm not allowed to say yet really but keep your eyes peeled ;)

astronomyy /// Nothin On My Mind

Whilst everyone has gone mad for the Bearson remix of astronomyy’s Nothin On My Mind, we’ve still got a lot of time for the original. The recently released video is simplicity in it’s finest – one shot of a skater cruising down Boulevard Princesse Grâce de Monaco on the coast of the south of France at sunset. It’s beautiful, and sits perfectly on top of the track. Along with the release of the video, astronomyy have also announced their first London headline show on October 18th at The Waiting Room, Stoke Newington. Check out the video below:
